When he was just 17 years old, Audie Murphy altered his birth records so he could enlist in the military. The Texas native went on to become World War II’s most decorated soldier, receiving every award for valor available from the U.S. Army, as well as citations from France and Belgium. That alone would have made him one of the most significant Americans of the twentieth century. But Audie Murphy didn’t stop there. He became a charismatic film and television star with a thriving, two-decade career that was only halted by his untimely death at age 45.
