About The Bill Engvall Show
Jennifer Lawrence is one of most respected actresses working today, with an Oscar win before her 23rd birthday. But, it all started for JLaw at age 16 on The Bill Engvall Show, a three-season family sitcom originally broadcast on TBS.
“Blue Collar” Comedian Bill Engvall stars as Bill Pearson, a family therapist in Louisville, Colorado. Nancy Travis is his wife, Susan. Their kids are bookish tween Bryan (Skyler Gisondo), dopey teenager Travis (Graham Patrick Martin), and Lawrence as wise-cracking Lauren, the eldest. The supporting cast includes SNL veterans Tim Meadows as Bill’s buddy and Brian Doyle-Murray (Bill’s brother) as crotchety neighbor Mr. Faulkner.
Plenty of comics have attempted to translate a stand-up comedy persona to a weekly sitcom format, with varying degrees of success. The Bill Engvall Show succeeds for the same reason Engvall’s act has for decades: its relatable to pretty much anybody. From money problems, to relationship issues, to trouble with kids, the situations in this comedy are delightfully genuine.
“I’m so grateful for it,” Lawrence said of The Bill Engvall Show in a 2010 interview. “I had so much fun on that show, and we all became like family.”
