Crazy Like A Fox

About Crazy Like A Fox

(1984-1986, CBS)

An aging private eye enlists the help of his uptight attorney son on low-rent cases in this classic 1980s crime show.

Veteran character actor Jack Warden stars as Harrison “Harry” Fox, a sixty-something P.I. with a San Francisco office straight out of B-grade film noir. Musical theater star John Rubinstein is Harrison Jr., a lawyer who can’t say no when his dad asks for help. Each week brings a new case, but with a delightful spin: Crazy Like a Fox is essentially an action comedy. In fact, Warden was nominated twice for Emmys as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy series.

Also along for the ride are Penny Peyser and Robby Kiger as Harrison’s wife and son and Robert Hanley as Harry’s cop friend. Della Reese recurs as a nurse who aids Harry in his extra-legal investigative techniques (and flirts up a storm with him).

Initially a huge ratings success, Crazy Like a Fox died a premature death after being bounced around the schedule by CBS. The series remains beloved today thanks to smart writing, hilarious slapstick action, and an all-star team of guest stars from classic Hollywood and contemporary comedy.
