About The Equalizer
One of the greatest American TV action heroes of the 1980s was a white-haired British man in his 50s. And his name was Edward Woodward.
The Equalizer combined the crime-of-the-week procedural with an unfolding mythology about spy-turned-vigilante Robert McCall (Woodward) and his dark past at a CIA-like agency. Each week, the brooding McCall haunted the violent backstreets of 1980s New York City on a mission to help the helpless, while rebuilding a long-neglected relationship with his son (William Zabka).
Woodward was Emmy-nominated in each of the show’s four seasons. As time passed, he experienced health issues and supporting characters were added to assist McCall. Chief among these was Mickey Kostmayer (Keith Szarabajka), a young former Navy SEAL. McCall’s friend Jimmy (Mark Margolis) was his surveillance expert. And Harley Gage (Richard Jordan) was an ex-spy tasked with finding McCall when he was abducted. Watching over it all was McCall’s ex-boss and occasional antagonist Control (Robert Lansing).
The Equalizer is also well-remembered for it’s innovative score by Police drummer Stewart Copeland. The series inspired a feature film starring Denzel Washington in 2014 and a sequel in 2018. Edward Woodward died in 2009, but his legacy lives on in a generation of fans who thought he was the coolest guy on TV.
