About In The Heat Of The Night
(1988-1995, NBC and CBS)
Carroll O’Connor is Mississippi police chief Bill Gillespie and Howard E. Rollins Jr. is Detective (later, attorney) Virgil Tibbs in this long-running hit based on the Oscar-winning film and novel.
While the movie presents Gillespie and Tibbs as antagonists in the racially charged Civil Rights Era, this contemporary story reimagines them as partners and friends. They’re supported by a large cast, including Hugh O’Connor as Lt. Lonnie Jamison, Alan Autry as Capt. Bubba Skinner, Anne-Marie Johnson as Virgil’s wife Althea, and Emmy nominee Lois Nettleton as Gillespie’s sometime girlfriend Joanne. Filmed primarily on location in Georgia, In the Heat of the Night has a delightfully authentic Southern flavor. Stories are episodic in nature, but an on-going narrative unfolds over seven years in the fictional town of Sparta.
O’Connor won an Emmy for his portrayal of Gillespie, and also served as writer and producer. Rollins left after season six and was replaced by Carl Weathers as chief Hampton Forbes. Following the conclusion of the weekly show, In the Heat of the Night continued as a series of made-for-TV movies, concluding in May of 1995.
