About One West Waikiki
(1994-1996, CBS and Syndicated)
Los Angeles forensic pathologist Dr. “Holli” Holliday (Cheryl Ladd) comes to Hawaii to give a speech, finds her fiancé dead, and ends up with a new job: as Hawaii’s chief medical examiner. Her reluctant partner in crime-solving is Lt. Mack Wolfe (Richard Burgi), a hot mess of a cop who’s balancing an ex-wife, ex-girlfriend, and multiple debt collectors.
Holli’s assistant is Nui Shaw (Elsie Sniffen), a Hawaiian-born forensic technician who counsels the newcomer in local customs and matters of the heart. Mac’s investigative wingman is Kimo (Ogie Zulueta), a wise-cracking technology specialist. Rounding out the core cast is Paul Gleason as Mack’s boss Dave Herzog.
Produced by veteran Glen A. Larson, this innovative crime series originally aired on CBS, before moving to first-run syndication for season two. The second season places more emphasis on Mack’s cloak-and-dagger past as a military police officer, playing up the bioterrorism and espionage storylines and visiting exotic locations like Samoa and New Zealand.
Series star Ladd was 43 when One West Waikiki began, seven years older than her male co-star. Even though Holli and Mack’s relationship never develops beyond a trusting, flirty friendship, that fact alone makes the show unique for its era.
Notable guest stars: Ken Howard, Robert Forster, Adrienne Barbeau, Don Ho, Pat Morita, Tristan Rogers, Doug McClure, Efrem Zimbalist Jr., Julia Nickson, Rebecca Staab
