About Sonja Henie: Fire On Ice
She was ice skating’s number one superstar, with gold medals in three consecutive Olympic games. Her distinctive white skates, scandalously short skirts, and charming Norwegian accent delighted Americans in popular personal appearances. And Hollywood was next on her to-do list.
“I want to do with skates what Fred Astaire is doing with dance,” Sonja Henie said.
And soon, she got her wish. In 1936, Twentieth Century-Fox signed her to a five-year contract, designing a series of skating-themed musical films around their newest star. But after the blockbuster Sun Valley Serenade in 1941, World War II would change everything.
This retrospective includes interviews with Henie’s friends and co-stars like Ann Miller and Milton Berle as well as rare footage from her films and live performances.
Notable guest stars: Ann Miller, Roddy McDowall, Milton Berle, Dorothy Hamill, Fred De Cordova, James Parish, Michael Kirby.
