About The Steve Harvey Show
(1996–2002, The WB)
You may know Steve Harvey as one of the Original Kings of Comedy or as the host of popular talk and game shows. But before he became one of TV’s hottest emcees, he headlined his own six-season situation comedy: The Steve Harvey Show.
Harvey plays R&B singer turned teacher Steve Hightower, a sort of father figure/mentor to his students in an inner-city Chicago high school. Co-stars include his fellow King of Comedy Cedric the Entertainer as coach Cedric Jackie Robinson and Wendy Raquel Robinson as school principal Regina Grier. Terri J. Vaugh joins the cast in season two as Lovita, Cedric’s girlfriend (and later, wife). The students include Merlin Santana as ladies’ man Romeo Santana and William Lee Scott as goofy Stanley “Bullethead” Kuznocki.
Steve Hightower’s background as a musician gave producers a good excuse to cast current and former music stars in cameo roles including Snoop Dogg, Sean “Diddy” Combs, and Busta Rhymes. The series also does a great job paying homage to African-American TV history, with icons like Isabel Sanford (All In The Family, The Jeffersons) and Ja’Net DuBois (Good Times) featured as guest stars.
