About Good Times
Florida Evans (Esther Rolle) and her husband James (John Amos) are struggling to raise a family in 1970s Chicago. Their kids are high-spirited J.J. (Jimmie Walker), daughter Thelma (Bern Nadette Stanis), and Michael (Ralph Carter), the politically minded baby of the family. Always dropping by is Florida’s friend and neighbor Willona Woods (Ja’net Dubois) and building superintendent Nathan Bookman (Johnny Brown).
Created by Eric Monte and Mike Evans and developed by Norman Lear, Good Times began as a frank depiction of family life in an inner-city housing project. With Walker emerging as a breakout star, the series evolved with a greater focus on the antics of J.J. (His catchphrase “Dy-no-mite!” became a national obsession.) Amos clashed with producers over the show’s creative direction and was written out after the third season. Rolle left after the fourth. Dubois stepped up as the lead and supporting players were added, including Janet Jackson as an orphan adopted by Willona.
Rolle returned for the sixth and final season, as Thelma marries her football player boyfriend Keith (Ben Powers) and the Good Times end on a high note. In total, Rolle played Florida for seven seasons, having originated the character on the All In The Family spinoff Maude in 1972.
